The Uganda Secondary Schools sports competitions for the new year 2026 are just around the corner, and giant sports institutions are positioning themselves to make a strong start by strengthening both their human resources and squads in different disciplines.
In a move to maintain their winning mentality, sports powerhouse St Mary’s Kitende has poached former Buddo SS sports tutor Marion Atwegyeise and added her to their staff as the new sports tutor.

It is a rare position at the secondary school level; for starters, it is more commonly found in higher institutions of learning such as universities and colleges. However, given the weight and status of a secondary school like St Mary’s Kitende, it is a position they have maintained over the years, guiding and supervising the development of sports at the school with the support of games teachers.

Atwegyeise now brings with her vast sports experience gathered at fellow sports giant Buddo SS, where she served from 2017 until 2024, when she decided to take a sabbatical from school sports administration.

It is obviously an honour for anyone, be it an athlete or administrator, to move from a high-calibre institution like Buddo SS to another top-class school such as St Mary’s Kitende — and for Atwegyeise, it is no different.
“I feel so honoured and blessed to be joining a top sports school like Kitende. Because this is a new post, it comes with a lot of obligations and roles, but all in all, I am so grateful,” the soft-spoken Atwegyeise said.

She automatically carries with her a wealth of experience in managing and guiding young female athletes into competitive and focused teams, with her record of titles at Buddo SS speaking for itself.

Atwegyeise, who had been the netball and basketball patron at Buddo SS, will find a similar calling at her new station, Kitende, which specialises in girls’ basketball and netball, as well as boys’ football, and has enjoyed sustained success in all.

Atwegyeise leaves behind a trophy cabinet filled with silverware at Buddo SS — an indication of the great success she registered with the Wakiso-based side — and joins another well-stocked cabinet at Kitende, also a Wakiso rival.

In her first year of service at Buddo SS, Marion guided the girls’ basketball team to a national silver medal in Gulu in 2017 before they won girls’ gold and boys’ silver at the FEASSA Games hosted in the same city.

The following year, 2018, saw Buddo SS lift the girls’ basketball FEASSA gold at the games hosted in Musanze, Rwanda, with the boys’ team settling for silver, while the netball team won silver at the national championship.

The year 2019 yielded even more victories as they recorded boys’ basketball gold at the FEASSA Games in Arusha, Tanzania; boys’ basketball national championship gold; Wakiso regional netball gold; girls’ basketball FEASSA bronze; Nabageleka Cup netball gold; netball national championship silver; and netball novices national championship gold.

Sports activities in 2020 and 2021 were halted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted competitions across the globe.

However, upon resumption in 2022, Atwegyeise and Buddo SS picked up from where they had left off, winning a double in boys’ basketball 3x3 and 5x5 at the FEASSA Games hosted in Arusha, Tanzania. This came after another double triumph in boys’ 3x3 and 5x5 basketball at the national USSSSA Games.

The year 2023 was equally successful for Atwegyeise, as she guided the Buddo SS girls’ basketball 3x3 team to gold at the Federation of Africa School Sports (FASS) Games in Rabat, Morocco.

At the same time, the boys retained the double gold in basketball 3x3 and 5x5 at the FEASSA Games hosted in Huye, Rwanda, while the netball team secured silver at the same games — marking a high-class climax to Atwegyeise’s successes at Buddo SS.

It is somewhat coincidental that she now joins St Mary’s Kitende, a school that over the years denied her former side both netball and girls’ basketball gold medals at national and FEASSA competitions.
What remains on the lips of the secondary school sports fraternity, however, is appreciation for a uniquely gifted female sports administrator in Marion Atwegyeise.

With this acquisition, the powerhouse has strengthened significantly ahead of the upcoming schools’ sports season. Kitende has gone two consecutive years without national USSSA and FEASSA boys’ football titles, and these moves are believed to be deliberate efforts aimed at regaining their past glory.
