Rubirizi - Police in Rubirizi District are investigating a case of unlawful wounding involving a Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) officer. The incident occurred on April 7, 2025, at around 4:00 PM in Nyakagyezi II Cell, along the Katerera–Kyambura road in Katerera Town Council, Rubirizi District.

Martial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and identified the victim as RA 234230 Pte Yoakim Onyango, a UPDF officer attached to Kanywero Army Detach in the 209 Battalion.

According to police, the suspects were traveling in a vehicle with registration number UBN 856Q, a Toyota Wish. It is alleged that on April 6, 2025, at around 11:00 PM, ASP Namudoola Oliver, the Officer-in-Charge of Katerera Police Station, led a joint patrol team comprising police and UPDF officers in Katerera Town Council. While patrolling in Nyakagyezi II Cell, the team encountered a suspicious vehicle parked along the roadside and proceeded to check on the occupants.
“The patrol team stopped to check the occupants of the vehicle, but the occupants fired a shot and drove off, injuring a UPDF officer in the left leg,” Tumusiime said.

He further noted that the patrol team responded by deflating the vehicle’s tires in an attempt to stop the suspects.

The injured officer was rushed to a nearby drug shop for first aid, while a team of investigators visited the scene. Despite efforts, the suspects remain unidentified. The vehicle was photographed, and statements were recorded from the officers involved in the patrol.
“Although the rifle used by the suspects was not recovered, six empty cartridges were found at the scene—one of which is believed to have been fired by the suspects,” Tumusiime added.

Police say investigations are ongoing as they work to identify and apprehend the suspects behind the attack.
