KAMPALA
A heated public clash has erupted between Catholic priest Deogratias Kiibi Kateregga and Muslim cleric Muhsin Burhaan Kiti following controversial remarks about Christian fasting during Lent.
The dispute was triggered after Sheikh Kiti reportedly mocked Christians observing the Lenten fast, suggesting they were “fooling themselves” by abstaining from food and habits while continuing to sin.
His comments drew a sharp and personal rebuttal from Father Kiibi, a prominent Catholic preacher, who accused the Sheikh of speaking ignorantly on matters he does not understand.
“People who talk without understanding what they are saying should keep quiet,” Father Kiibi said, adding that the cleric was making “senseless remarks” about a religious practice beyond his knowledge.
The priest went further, questioning the Sheikh’s judgment and criticising what he described as a pattern of reckless commentary.
Social Media Erupts
The exchange has ignited intense debate across social media, with many Catholics condemning the remarks as disrespectful to one of Christianity’s most sacred observances.
Lent is a 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and reflection leading up to Easter, during which believers practice spiritual discipline, often through abstinence from certain foods and habits.
Sheikh Kiti, known for his outspoken sermons and strong online presence, has previously drawn controversy over comments on Christian practices, including criticism of pilgrims at Namugongo.
Tensions Amid Sacred Seasons
The clash comes at a sensitive time when both Christian and Muslim communities are engaged in periods of fasting—Lent for Christians and, in some cases, overlapping with Ramadan—raising concerns about interfaith relations. Religious analysts warn that such public confrontations, while not uncommon in Uganda’s vibrant religious landscape, risk inflaming tensions if not handled with restraint and mutual respect.
No Apologies Yet
As of now, neither Deogratias Kiibi Kateregga nor Muhsin Burhaan Kiti has issued a formal apology, and the war of words continues to generate reactions across religious circles.
Father Kiibi is widely recognised for his inspirational preaching and community outreach, while Sheikh Kiti commands a large following through his online sermons and public engagements.
More developments are expected as both sides respond to the growing public debate.
