Mbarara
The Catholic Church in Mbarara Archdiocese and across western Uganda is mourning the death of veteran gospel musician and composer JB Kazoora, who passed away at the age of 77—just a week after celebrating his wedding.
Kazoora, widely revered for his contribution to indigenous sacred music, died on May 4, 2026, only days after receiving the sacrament of Holy Matrimony on April 25, 2026. His sudden death has shocked the faithful, many of whom had recently celebrated his union.
For decades, Kazoora stood out as a leading figure in the composition of Runyankore hymns used in Catholic liturgy. His music became deeply embedded in worship across parishes in western Uganda, shaping the spiritual experience of generations.

Among his most celebrated compositions is Ekitiinwa, Ayi Mukama, a Runyankore adaptation of the Gloria, widely used during the introductory rites of the Mass. He also composed Mukama Otusaasire, a solemn Kyrie invoking God’s mercy, and Nkwata Omukono Taata, a hymn reflecting total surrender to Christ, especially in times of hardship.
Other notable works include Ai Mukama Wangye Ompindure Ekikwato, inspired by the Prayer of St. Francis; Ebirungi Byonkoreire Taata and Ndyakusiima Nta, both centered on thanksgiving; and Mukama Ndinda, a prayer for divine protection. His hymn Tihariho Ndijo Owakubasa Kutujuna strongly affirms faith in Christ as the sole savior.
Church leaders and members of the faithful have described Kazoora as a pillar of local-language liturgical music, whose compositions strengthened the use of Runyankore in Catholic worship and enriched the Church’s cultural identity.
“His music gave a voice to our faith in our own language,” one church elder said. “He will be remembered every time we gather for Mass.”
The news of his death, coming so soon after his wedding, has added to the grief felt across the region, with many expressing condolences and reflecting on his lifelong dedication to gospel music.
Funeral and burial arrangements are yet to be announced.
