Parliament’s Committee on Government Assurances and Implementation has pressed the Ministry of Works and Transport to explain delays in fulfilling its commitment to construct more than 30 bridges on national roads.
Deputy Chairperson of the Committee, Hon. Anna Adeke Ebaju, the FDC Soroti District Woman Representative, said the Committee wants the Ministry to provide clarity on what stalled the bridge projects and when the outstanding commitments will be fulfilled.

Hon. Robert Ssewagudde, the Representative of Persons with Disabilities, questioned the Ministry’s explanation that delays recorded during the 2021/2022 Financial Year were partly caused by COVID-19 restrictions.

Ssewagudde noted that essential workers and providers of critical services were allowed to operate during the restrictions under established procedures, and questioned why the measures should have significantly affected implementation of the bridge projects.

The Committee is expected to seek further explanations from the Ministry on the status of the affected projects, the causes of the delays, and the timelines for their completion.
