Ibanda — In a significant step towards embracing emerging technologies in higher education, Ibanda University has held its first-ever public lecture dedicated to exploring the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academia.
The lecture, hosted in the University Board Room under the theme “Artificial Intelligence: Its Application in Research, Teaching, and Assessment,” brought together professors, academic staff, and other education stakeholders to discuss the opportunities and challenges of integrating AI into learning, research, and administration.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Hossana Twinomurinzi, a distinguished academic and technology expert from the University of Johannesburg in South Africa, highlighted the transformative potential of AI in education.
“Artificial Intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept — it is already shaping the way we teach, assess, and conduct research,” Prof. Twinomurinzi said.
However, he cautioned that while AI offers powerful tools, it is not without flaws. “We must continue to build our data analysis and critical thinking skills alongside AI. Technology should never replace human judgment.”
Prof. Twinomurinzi also stressed the importance of intentional training in the responsible use of AI, arguing that digital literacy is now as fundamental as reading and writing. “Our students must be equipped not just to use AI tools, but to understand their limitations and the ethical implications of relying on them,” he added.
The event was officially opened by Prof. Peter Kanyandago, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Ibanda University, who welcomed participants and emphasized the significance of the discussion.
“This platform will enable our academic community to appreciate both the opportunities and the challenges AI brings to modern education,” Prof. Kanyandago noted.
In his closing remarks, Dr. John Busingye, Chairperson of the University Board of Directors, urged lecturers and academic staff to apply the insights gained from the lecture.
“AI is here to stay. I encourage all our staff to integrate AI into their work — not just in theory, but in practical, everyday teaching and research,” Dr. Busingye said.
The lecture is part of Ibanda University’s broader strategy to foster innovation and prepare students for a rapidly evolving digital world.
