A section of Members of Parliament from the Karamoja sub-region has called for the resignation and a public apology from Isaac Ssemakade, the President of the Uganda Law Society (ULS). The MPs accuse him of making derogatory and vulgar comments against the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Jane Frances Abodo, and dragging the entire Karamoja region into his criticisms.
MPs express outrage
During a press briefing at Parliament, John Baptist Lokii (Matheniko County) condemned Ssemakade's remarks, which allegedly referenced the DPP’s genitalia. Lokii went so far as to question Ssemakade's humanity, rhetorically asking if he was “born through an anus instead of a vagina like all humans.”
Lokii described the comments as “diabolical” and “a disgrace to the lawyers of Uganda,” emphasizing that Ssemakade’s continued vulgarity shames the legal profession.
“This isn’t the first time Ssemakade has targeted the DPP. When she was first appointed, he made similar comments, and the country ignored him, thinking he would reform. Now, with the platform given to him by the lawyers of this country, he has abused it. He must resign,” Lokii demanded.
Defense of Jane Frances Abodo
Faith Nakut (Napak Woman MP) defended Abodo, highlighting her remarkable journey to becoming the DPP as a girl from Karamoja. Nakut stressed that Abodo’s rise reflects immense resilience, and it is unacceptable for her to face ridicule after enduring so much to reach her current position.
“We acknowledge Ssemakade’s desire to reform the Uganda Law Society, but his choice of words is deeply troubling. Referring to the DPP’s genitalia and dragging Karamoja into this is offensive and unacceptable,” Nakut stated.
Nakut further criticized Ssemakade’s failure to address his grievances constructively, noting, “Lawyers are known for their brilliance in handling issues professionally. How do we descend into insults and vulgarity? We demand a public apology to the DPP and Karamoja immediately.”
Public outcry in Karamoja
Joseph Komol (Dodoth North MP) joined the condemnation, calling Ssemakade’s remarks “madness” and surprising to the people of Karamoja. “The vulgar words against Abodo and the region are shocking. The entire Karamoja is upset. Everyone is saying Ssemakade is mad. He owes us an apology,” Komol remarked.

Call for action
The MPs emphasized that Ssemakade’s behavior tarnishes the reputation of the Uganda Law Society and demanded his immediate resignation. They argued that his remarks have embarrassed not only the legal profession but also the entire nation.
The MPs insist that a swift and public apology is necessary to restore respect for the DPP, Karamoja, and the Uganda Law Society. Whether Ssemakade will respond to these demands remains to be seen.
