Residents of Bugaya I and Bugaya II villages in Bugaya Parish, Magambo Sub-county, Rubirizi District, are facing a severe crisis due to a devastating baboon troop that has destroyed crops and killed livestock, including hens and goat kids. The affected communities are now calling on the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) for urgent assistance. According to the locals, the baboons are coming from Karinju Forest and Queen Elizabeth National Park in Rubirizi District.
Generoza Kyaruhanga, the LC1 Vice Chairperson of Bugaya I village, revealed that residents had obtained a loan from the Parish Development Model (PDM) program to cultivate their gardens, but the baboon invasion has left them devastated. "We have written several letters to UWA and district officials, but we haven't received any feedback. Our crops have been destroyed, and we can hardly get a meal for our children," Kyaruhanga lamented.
Ganafa Johnbosco, the Chairperson of Bugaya II village farmers, expressed frustration that despite submitting multiple complaints to district leaders and the Uganda Wildlife Authority, they have not received any assistance.
"We appeal to the government to install an electric fence to prevent baboons from invading and destroying our gardens," Johnbosco appealed.
