The Rotary Club of Akright Kampala has initiated the renovation of Ishekye Unit for the Handicapped Primary School in Kabwohe Division, Sheema Municipality. The project, valued at UGX 240 million, will include the refurbishment of two classroom blocks, two student dormitories, walkways, and some staff quarters.
This renovation comes in response to an appeal by the school management committee for support to revive the school's deteriorating infrastructure. Founded in 1989 by the local community, Ishekye Unit for the Handicapped is one of the few schools in Sheema District catering to children with disabilities. The school currently enrolls 200 pupils, 170 of whom are living with disabilities.

Pearl Kahindi Habwomugisha, President of the Rotary Club of Akright Kampala, stated that the club decided to support the school as part of its corporate social responsibility. She also encouraged parents to ensure that children with disabilities receive an education, rather than hiding them away.
Joy Kabatooro, the school's headteacher, highlighted the school's ongoing struggles, including a lack of adequate classrooms, student walkways, teacher accommodations, sufficient staff, and access to clean water.

Seith Bishanga, Chairperson of the school's management committee, praised the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) for providing capacity-building workshops. These workshops have equipped school and community leaders with essential skills in organizational management, financial management, advocacy, and conflict resolution, enabling them to better manage the children with disabilities at the school.
Abel Kahara, the Mayor of Sheema Municipality, pledged full support for inclusive education for children with disabilities in schools across the municipality.
