Police in Rubirizi District are investigating circumstances under which a 53-year-old woman allegedly took her own life following prolonged domestic conflicts. The deceased, identified as Katushabe Manuelina, a resident of Katara III Village, Katera Parish, Kichwamba Sub-county, was found hanging from a tree in her garden on Friday after being missing for four days.

Police take the deceased's body for post-mortem

According to the LC1 chairperson of Katara III Village, John Patrick Behangana, the deceased had been facing long-standing family misunderstandings, mainly linked to a 13-year-old girl alleged to be an illegitimate child.
“As leaders, we tried several times to mediate between them, but tensions persisted. It’s very painful that the conflict has ended in such a tragic way,” Mr. Behangana said.

He appealed to families to embrace dialogue and forgiveness when handling disputes instead of resorting to violence. The deceased’s husband, Twine Deo Makaya, said their disagreement stemmed from issues surrounding the same child.

The Officer-in-Charge of Kichwamba Police Station, Afande Julius Masereka, confirmed the incident, saying police visited the scene with crime investigators and took the body to Rugazi Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination.
“We advise families to embrace forgiveness and seek peaceful means of resolving disputes instead of resorting to violence,” Masereka said.

They appealed to the public to utilize local leaders and authorities in resolving conflicts rather than taking drastic measures.
