Tawila, North Darfur — Dozens of displaced Sudanese arrived in Tawila town on Saturday following violent attacks by Sudan’s notorious paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and allied militias.
The RSF launched a major offensive on Friday targeting the Zamzam and Abu Shorouk displacement camps as well as the nearby city of El-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur, according to a United Nations official.
The two-day assault on the famine-stricken camps left more than 100 people dead, including 20 children and nine aid workers. The attacks resumed on Saturday, the UN confirmed in a statement.

El-Fasher remains under the control of the Sudanese military, which has been locked in a brutal civil war with the RSF since the conflict erupted two years ago. The war has claimed over 24,000 lives, according to UN estimates, though activists warn the actual death toll is likely much higher.
The offensive has displaced approximately 2,400 people from the camps and El-Fasher, according to the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees, a local humanitarian group in Darfur.

Zamzam and Abu Shorouk camps currently shelter over 700,000 people who had previously fled violence in other parts of Darfur, the UN reports. Despite the Sudanese military’s recent symbolic victory in retaking the capital, Khartoum, the RSF continues to control much of the Darfur region and other parts of the country.

The Zamzam and Abu Shorouk camps are among five areas in Sudan where famine has been officially declared by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a global hunger monitoring organization. The ongoing war has triggered the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with nearly 25 million people — half of Sudan’s population — now facing extreme hunger.
