Mbarara - At 76, many would expect to see a retired athlete whose glory days are far behind. But that is not the case for Mzee Jim Bitwire, a seasoned golfer from Mbarara Golf Club, who continues to defy age and challenge much younger competitors. Over the weekend, Bitwire stunned the field at the first edition of the KCB Quarterly Mag Golf Event held at the 9-hole Mbarara Golf Course, returning a net score of 63 to claim the overall title.

“I have played golf for more than 40 years, since the 1980s, alongside players like Mr. Mutegyeki who is here with us today. For me, age is just a number—golf is in my bloodstream,” Bitwire said after lifting his winner’s trophy. “When I learned that KCB was sponsoring the event and that the best performers would represent us in Nairobi for a regional tournament, I came prepared. I am happy to win and proud to be part of the team.”
Playing off handicap 15, Bitwire outclassed his nearest challengers: Bernard Amwine (67), Ismael Atuhwera (69), Gabriel Woods (72), and the most improved female player, Winnie Mpabwa (64).
