Mbarara City FC ended their 2024/2025 Uganda Premier League home campaign with an emphatic 2-0 win over Express FC on Friday.
The game, played at Kakyeka Stadium, marked their final home fixture of the season and their fourth win under caretaker coach Issa Sselwanjja, who took charge after the sacking of manager Livingstone Mbabazi. Under Mbabazi’s leadership, the team had been on the verge of relegation.
Sadiq Almahad is joined by teammates to cerebrate his goal for Mbarara City
Express FC, who are neither facing relegation nor contending for any silverware this season, turned up with a depleted squad of just 14 players—11 starters and three substitutes. However, the Ankole Lions ensured their fans went home smiling by delivering a convincing win in their last home match.
Goals from defender Bernard Ndifuna and eventual man of the match Sadiq Almahad Nasur secured the victory. Remarkably, this was the only time in 37 league matches this season that Mbarara City scored two unanswered goals.
Rumours are swirling that former coach Brian Ssenyondo has agreed to return next season to take the helm of Mbarara City, with Sselwanjja expected to deputize him. Regardless of the outcome of their final away match against Maroons FC, Mbarara City has secured its place in the top flight and will be looking ahead to what Ssenyondo brings next season.
