KAMPALA, Uganda

The Government has released UGX45 billion to support emergency food relief for drought- and hunger-stricken communities in the Karamoja sub-region, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has announced.
Speaking on the government's intervention, Nabbanja said President Yoweri Museveni had directed the immediate distribution of food to the worst-affected communities as part of efforts to address the worsening food insecurity in the region.

She said the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) has been contracted to oversee the distribution exercise, with deliveries scheduled to commence on Friday.
According to the Prime Minister, priority will be given to the most severely affected districts to ensure vulnerable households receive food assistance as quickly as possible.

Nabbanja noted that the government had already provided relief to Kaabong, Kotido, and parts of Moroto District, where prolonged drought has left many families struggling to access food.
She added that she would return to Cabinet to seek additional resources to extend food relief to other affected areas beyond the initial beneficiaries.

The emergency intervention comes amid growing concerns over the humanitarian impact of prolonged dry conditions in Karamoja, where recurring droughts have continued to affect crop production, livestock, and household food security.

Government officials say the food relief programme forms part of broader efforts to cushion vulnerable communities while longer-term interventions aimed at improving resilience and food production are implemented.
