Wild celebrations, accompanied by Christian songs of victory led by the school head teacher, Rev. James Hannington Tumwesigye, filled Kabwohe Football Grounds at the final whistle of the USSSA Sheema District boys’ football championship on Sunday.

It was a moment of relief and triumph—marking the end of a 15-year wait since Sheema attained district status. Despite its rich football history, Nganwa High School had never stepped onto the podium to celebrate victory.
This time, however, history was made. The “Amagyezi Garya Amaani” boys rose against all odds to claim the title, defeating first-time finalists Savannah Secondary School 2–0 in a highly contested final.

Team captain Dada Bonga led by example, scoring one goal in each half of the match—enough to secure the long-awaited championship.

“We are extremely happy and thank the Lord for enabling us to win this trophy that we had never won before. This victory is a result of discipline, hard work, and the determination of our boys. I also thank the school stakeholders for their support, especially the old boys who are doing everything possible to ensure our players’ talents are developed. They are the brains behind the Nganwa League, which has improved the standards of football, and we appreciate their continued support. We also thank the surrounding community, with whom we have built a much better relationship. These are the fruits,” said Rev. James Hannington Tumwesigye.

Their success was further cemented by a 1–0 victory over record champions Ryakasinga CHE in the semifinals, making them clear favorites heading into the final. After all, to be the best, you must first overcome the best.
Nganwa High School will now lead five other boys’ teams from Sheema District as they seek glory at the USSSA Ankole Zone Championship, scheduled to take place from April 13–19 at Ibanda PTC.

In the girls’ category, record winners Sheema Girls Secondary School—despite fielding only nine players—regained their podium position with a 4–2 penalty shootout victory over arch-rivals Kibingo Girls.

The Sheema District queens played almost the entire tournament with just nine players after several athletes were ruled ineligible. Nevertheless, they defied the odds, progressing successfully through the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final to clinch victory.

The Physical Education and Sports Commissioner, Rev. Canon Duncan Mugumya, awarded the trophy to the girls and cautioned all teams against fielding ineligible players, emphasizing that sports regulations would be strictly enforced against offenders.
