BULAMBULI- The Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) 3rd Infantry Division has intensified search and recovery operations for individuals believed to be trapped following the devastating landslide that hit villages in Buluganya Sub-county, Bulambuli District, on November 27, 2024.
Major General Don Nabasa, the Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, provided updates during a field assessment of the affected areas. “Search and recovery efforts will continue. On a positive note, our forces retrieved the body of Waniala Paul, 55, from Masugu Village, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities to 31,” said Maj Gen Nabasa.

He called upon the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and other partners to provide additional equipment to facilitate recovery operations, as the challenging terrain and debris have significantly hindered progress.
Brigadier General Fred Rugadya Akiki, Head of the National Emergency Coordination Centre in the OPM, reported that 2,023 temporary residents have been registered at the Bunambutye resettlement camp, with verification still ongoing.
He outlined the collaborative efforts of various ministries and NGOs to deliver essential services to the displaced, including clean water, mosquito nets, large tents, fumigation, meals, and a standby ambulance. In addition, the government has allocated funds for drilling more boreholes in Plot 148 to meet the community’s water needs.
Brig Gen Akiki expressed gratitude for the critical support from NGOs such as UNFPA, the Red Cross, Oxfam, Caritas, the Salvation Army, CRS, and ACORD.
The Ministry of Works plans to upgrade access roads to accommodate 248 new households, each set to be relocated to separate three-acre plots. To ensure effective management, displaced residents have been grouped by sub-county and constituency. Security at the sites and camps is being provided by the UPDF, Uganda Police Force, and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
These joint efforts aim to ensure the success of recovery operations and facilitate the safe resettlement of the internally displaced persons (IDPs).
