One woman was killed on the spot and six others sustained injuries after a truck loaded with Irish potatoes overturned along the Kabale–Kisoro road in Rubanda District.
The accident occurred at Kamuserwa Cell, Nyarurambi Ward, Rubanda Town Council, and involved a blue Mitsubishi Fuso truck, registration number UBN 989U, which was traveling from Kisoro toward Kabale.
The deceased has been identified as Orikyiriza Patience, an adult female resident of Kahama Village, Ibumba Parish, Rwamucucu Sub-county in Rukiga District.

According to police, the injured include:

  • Musimenta Edrinah, 63, a resident of Rwanjure Village, Burime Parish, Rwamucucu Sub-county in Rukiga District;
  • Kyarisima Provia, 56, a resident of Rubare Town, Ntungamo District;
  • Amutuhire Scovia, 40, from Kyabukojo Village, Mutojo Parish, Rubare Sub-county in Ntungamo District;
  • Ntwirenaba Alex, 28, a resident of Ntungamo Town;
  • Tugume Bruce, a resident of Kandaga Village, Muhanga Sub-county in Rukiga District;
  • Mutesi Diana, 33, from Rubare Town Council in Ntungamo District.

All the injured were rushed to Muko Health Centre, where they are receiving treatment.

Police say preliminary investigations indicate that the truck failed to negotiate a sharp corner before overturning.
Mr. Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, said, “It is alleged that the driver of the Fuso truck, which was carrying Irish potatoes and passengers, failed to control the vehicle while negotiating a sharp corner at Kamuserwa Cell, causing it to overturn.”

He added that traffic police responded promptly. A team of officers led by AIP Mwine visited and documented the scene. The body of the deceased was taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination, while the vehicle was towed to Rubanda Central Police Station pending a mechanical inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

Police cautioned drivers to adhere to speed limits and avoid carrying passengers in cargo trucks, especially on hilly roads with sharp corners.
“We continue to urge motorists to drive carefully, especially on mountainous roads in the Kigezi region, and to desist from overloading and transporting passengers in cargo trucks,” Maate warned.
