COURT - The trial of suspects in the murder of Henry Katanga resumed with the cross-examination of Andrew Kizimula Mubiru, Director of Forensics for the Uganda Police Force. Defence lawyer MacDosman Kabega challenged Mubiru on discrepancies in the DNA examination of a pistol, noting a mismatch between the serial number in Mubiru's report (162220061CZ999 compact) and that submitted by the Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) (162220061CZ99 compact).

The court heard that the pistol, spent cartridge, live ammunition, and magazine were submitted to a ballistic expert for further analysis. Defence lawyers, including Peter Kabatsi, Elison Karuhanga, Jet Tumwebaze, and Bruce Musinguzi, are representing the accused, while Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Samali Wakooli, Chief State Attorneys Jonathan Muwaganya, and Anna Kiiza are prosecuting. Katanga’s widow, Molly Katanga, along with daughters Patricia Kakwanza and Martha Nkwanzi, domestic worker George Amanyire, and nursing officer Charles Otai, are accused of destroying evidence and being accessories to the murder. Henry Katanga, a businessman, was shot in the head on November 2, 2023, at his residence in Mbuya, Kampala.

During cross-examination, Kabega sought to admit several documents as evidence, including a crime scene management procedure manual and a forensic services performance report. However, the prosecution objected to admitting a document known as EuroForMix, which they argued was not authored by Mubiru.

Judge Isaac Muwata, head of the Criminal Division of the High Court, reserved a ruling on the admissibility of these documents. Kabega continued to question Mubiru, highlighting the absence of a chain of custody log in the DNA report and suggesting that the gun examined by Mubiru was not the one submitted by the police.

The trial continues with further cross-examination and testimonies from other witnesses.
