An expert’s guide to a long life
Health is wealth, as the saying goes. Staying healthy and preventing diseases is very important, especially in rural areas where access to health facilities and services may be limited or costly. In this article, we will explore the natural ways of staying healthy using the resources available in Uganda.
Beans and millet are good sources of healthy proteins
Natural foods
Consuming natural foods is one of the best ways to maintain good health. These include fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and animal products grown or raised locally and organically, without the use of chemicals, pesticides, or hormones. Natural foods are rich in nutrients, antioxidants, and fiber, aiding in the prevention and treatment of various diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. Furthermore, they are more affordable, environmentally friendly, and culturally appropriate than processed or imported foods. Natural foods, including coffee, bananas, beans, maize, cassava, sweet potatoes, millet, sorghum, groundnuts, soybeans, honey, milk, eggs, meat, and fish, can be prepared using different methods such as roasting, boiling, steaming, baking, frying, and fermenting. However, frying food can increase calorie intake and pose health risks such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease due to the elevated trans fat content. It's advisable to explore alternative cooking methods that use less oil or utilize air fryers to achieve desired crispiness with minimal fat.
Natural Medicines
Utilizing natural medicines derived from herbs, spices, plants, roots, bark, leaves, flowers, seeds, and fruits is another effective approach to maintaining health. These natural remedies possess medicinal properties capable of treating or preventing various ailments like malaria, coughs, fevers, diarrhea, wounds, and infections. Compared to synthetic or conventional medicines, natural medicines are safer, cheaper, and more accessible, aligning better with local culture and beliefs and complementing traditional healing methods.
These Natural medicines include aloe vera, ginger, garlic, turmeric, lemongrass, neem, moringa, guava, and pawpaw. These can be prepared and administered in various forms such as teas, infusions, syrups, oils, creams, and ointments. Examples of natural remedies include:
Ginger Tea

Natural activities
A third method for maintaining health involves engaging in natural activities, such as physical exercise, outdoor recreation, social interaction, cultural expression, and spiritual practice. These activities contribute to physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being. They improve blood circulation, strengthen muscles and bones, boost immunity, reduce stress, increase happiness, foster creativity, and build relationships. Natural activities are inherently more enjoyable, meaningful, and fulfilling compared to artificial or passive activities.
A variety of natural activities include farming, gardening, walking, cycling, dancing, singing, drumming, storytelling, and praying. These activities can be enjoyed in various ways, such as joining a farmers’ group, planting a home garden, walking to the market, cycling to church, dancing at weddings, singing in choirs, drumming at festivals, storytelling around a fire, and praying at church. To make these activities more enjoyable and rewarding, consider the following tips:
Invite friends and family
Sharing natural activities with others enhances their enjoyment and sociability. Invite friends and family to participate in farming, gardening, walking, cycling, dancing, singing, drumming, storytelling, and praying. Alternatively, join or create groups or clubs that share your interests, such as farmers’ groups, trekking groups, cycling groups, dance groups, singing groups, drumming groups, storytelling groups, or prayer groups.
Set goals and challenges
Setting goals and challenges adds motivation and excitement to natural activities. Establish personal or group goals for farming, gardening, walking, cycling, and other activities. Challenge yourself or others to try new things, such as cultivating exotic plants or exploring different areas in the district.
Learn new skills and techniques
Continuously learning new skills and techniques makes natural activities more engaging and educational. Seek knowledge from various sources, such as books, YouTube, websites, and experienced individuals. Enhance your farming, walking, cycling, dancing, singing, drumming, storytelling, and praying skills to improve performance and enjoyment.
Celebrate achievements and milestones
Acknowledging accomplishments and milestones boosts morale and satisfaction. Celebrate successes in farming, gardening, walking, cycling, and other endeavors. Recognize progress and improvement in skills and techniques. Celebrating achievements triggers the release of hormones like dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins, which promote feelings of pleasure, well-being, and connection.
In conclusion, there are numerous natural methods for maintaining health, encompassing natural foods, medicines, and activities. These approaches offer multiple benefits, including cost savings, environmental preservation, support for the local economy, and cultural preservation. We encourage embracing and practicing these natural ways of staying healthy while sharing experiences and feedback with others.
