Bushenyi - A group of Senior Six and Senior Four Art and Design students from Kyeizooba Girls Secondary School in Bushenyi District yesterday visited the Ntambiko Crafts and Skilling Centre, located in Katungu Cell, Nyakabirizi Division, Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality. The students had the opportunity to learn about the centre's initiatives and witness firsthand the practical applications of their coursework. The Ntambiko Crafts and Skilling Centre has become a valuable resource for students, tourists, and efforts to preserve local culture.

The centre provides hands-on learning experiences, allowing students to create practical items from local materials. This approach helps learners develop their skills and apply them in real-world contexts.
The impact of the centre extends beyond education, as it also plays a significant role in preserving local culture and has become a tourist attraction. By showcasing traditional crafts and techniques, the centre promotes cultural heritage and creates economic opportunities for the community.
Can. Hon. Mary Karooro Okurut, the founder of the Ntambiko Crafts and Skilling Centre, expressed delight at the growing number of schools visiting the facility. She noted that the centre's work aligns with the new curriculum, which emphasizes skills-based learning.

Karooro also stressed the importance of equipping learners with practical skills, alongside academic knowledge, for the country's development.
“As a country, we can't rely on book knowledge alone. We need to equip our young people with practical skills. Let's teach them to make water pots, create statues, and paint, so they're not just limited to office jobs—they can also be self-employed,” said Karooro.

Museveni pledges support for the centre
During his Ankole Sub-region PDM presidential tour in February, President Yoweri Museveni made a stopover at the Ntambiko Crafts and Skilling Centre. He commended former Minister Mary Karooro Okurut for her outstanding contributions to preserving culture and empowering youth and women with valuable skills. The President pledged to support the centre's work.

James Mugarura, the Head of the Art and Design Department at Kyeizooba Girls Secondary School, said the students’ visit to the Ntambiko Crafts and Skilling Centre would help them enhance their practical skills, which can be applied both at school and at home.
Ampaire Queen Lisa, a Senior Four student at Kyeizooba Girls, said the visit to the centre inspired them to create their own crafts, which can become a source of income. She added that they gained new ideas that will be helpful to them in the future.
