Vatican City

A historic transition is unfolding at the Vatican today as over 130 cardinals from across the globe have convened for the secretive and sacred process of electing the next leader of the Roman Catholic Church. The papal conclave, an age-old tradition, has officially begun following a solemn Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica.

At 10:15 a.m. ET, the cardinal electors processed into the Sistine Chapel, where they will remain under strict isolation until a new pope is chosen. The conclave’s communications lockdown went into effect at 9:00 a.m. ET, with the Vatican governorate confirming that all external contact and telecommunications access have been cut off to preserve the integrity of the proceedings.

The cardinals now face a pivotal decision: whether to elect a pope who will continue the reformist legacy of Pope Francis — known for his advocacy on behalf of migrants, the poor, and environmental protection — or pivot toward a more conservative direction that emphasizes doctrinal tradition and institutional authority.

The world awaits the iconic signal — white smoke rising from the chimney above the Apostolic Palace — that will indicate a decision has been made. The chosen pope will then emerge onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to greet the faithful and deliver his first blessing as the head of the Catholic Church.

The conclave, steeped in secrecy and spiritual discernment, comes at a critical time for the Church, which continues to navigate challenges ranging from declining membership in parts of the world to internal debates over doctrine and reform.

Until then, the eyes of 1.4 billion Catholics remain fixed on Rome, praying and waiting for the words: “Habemus Papam” — “We have a Pope.”
