The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) held elections over the weekend to choose its new office bearers for the next four years during the association's 44th General Assembly.
With the position of president already declared unopposed for the incumbent, Justus Mugisha, much of the attention shifted to the election for the position of Third Vice President, where Celia Amanya emerged as one of the most notable candidates.
Amanya, the headmistress of Kibubura Girls' Secondary School, is widely known for her active role in school administration through the Association of Secondary Schools Headteachers in Uganda (ASSHU) rather than school sports administration.
She contested against Dynamic Secondary School director Richard Muhumuza after former First Vice President Hajji Twahil Kitezala withdrew from the race at the eleventh hour.
According to the results announced by returning officer Joseph Opio Ekodeu and his team, Amanya secured 70 votes, defeating Muhumuza, who polled 40 votes, to become the Third Vice President of USSSA on her first attempt.

Her election is expected to strengthen collaboration between USSSA and ASSHU, whose members play a key role in supporting school sports programmes across the country.
"I am very happy that the delegates have entrusted me with the position of Third Vice President, and I promise I will not let them down. I will work hard to bridge the gap between USSSA, ASSHU, and the Ministry of Education and Sports. I will also study the USSSA guidelines carefully so that we can strengthen the working relationship between the two associations," Amanya said after her election.
The Third Vice President's position was the only one among the association's top four leadership positions that was contested. Mugisha retained the presidency unopposed, while Harriet Apolot and Okot P'Bitek were also returned unopposed as First and Second Vice Presidents, respectively.
Speaking after his re-election, Mugisha thanked delegates for renewing their confidence in his leadership.
"I am deeply honoured by the confidence you have once again placed in me. Together with the incoming Executive Committee, we remain committed to advancing school sports, nurturing young talent, and ensuring that USSSA continues to provide opportunities that positively impact learners across the country," Mugisha said.
Mugisha's return as USSSA president follows his recent unopposed re-election as FEASSA President and FUFA First Vice President, as well as his election to the Executive Committee of the International School Sport Federation (ISF).
