The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (International Affairs), Henry Okello Oryem, has urged Muslim and Christian clerics to use the significant periods of Lent and Eid al-Fitr to condemn both religious and political violence ahead of the 2026 elections. Presiding over the Eid al-Fitr dinner at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) ambassador's residence in Kololo, Kampala, on Sunday, Okello emphasized the importance of promoting peace, tolerance, and understanding among people of different faiths and political affiliations. "By condemning violence and promoting peace, especially as Uganda approaches the 2026 general elections, we contribute to building a more harmonious and peaceful society in the democratic world," he said.

He also expressed appreciation to the UAE ambassador for hosting the celebration, noting that it coincided with the Christian Lenten season, a time observed through fasting, prayer, and repentance.

Uganda has historically enjoyed religious harmony, but Okello raised concerns about the rise of political radicalism within opposition parties, comparing it to the sharp Christian-Muslim ideological divides seen on the global stage. "Use your mosques and church platforms to preach against all forms of violence that continue to grow in our society. These important seasons should serve as moments of spiritual renewal and connection to God/Allah for peaceful coexistence," he urged.
Lent is a period of preparation and penance observed by Christians leading up to Easter, while Ramadan is a time of heightened spirituality and purification for Muslims, marked by fasting, communal prayer, and reflection. It is during this period that the Holy Quran is believed to have been revealed to the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

Emeritus Second Bishop of the Central Buganda Diocese, Jackson Matovu, who represented the Bishop of Mukono Diocese, welcomed Okello's call, acknowledging the overlap of major religious observances.
"Regardless of our differences, both Lent and Ramadan offer an opportunity for believers to deepen their spiritual connection with God and strengthen their faith," he said.

He further noted that "like Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, Lent is a 40-day period of repentance, fasting, and prayer observed by Christians."
Matovu emphasized that by using these sacred periods to denounce violence, Ugandans can promote a culture of peace and tolerance, which is essential for maintaining harmony and democracy, particularly as the country heads toward the 2026 elections.

UAE reaffirms commitment to construct Kidepo Valley Airport
The UAE Ambassador to Uganda, Abdalla Hassan Obaid Alshamsi, highlighted the importance of bringing together religious leaders, government officials, and dignitaries to foster unity, tolerance, and mutual brotherhood.

"Eid is traditionally celebrated with joy and excitement, marked by congregational prayers, festivities, family visits, gatherings, outings, and new clothes," he noted.

Alshamsi also reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to constructing Kidepo Valley Airport in Uganda.

"This project is a significant undertaking, with the airport expected to feature a 3,500-meter runway capable of accommodating large aircraft like the Boeing B777, thereby boosting tourism in Uganda," he emphasized.

The construction of the airport is being overseen by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Alshamsi expressed optimism that the project would create job opportunities for Ugandans.

This development is expected to enhance tourism in the region by improving access to Kidepo Valley National Park, renowned for its diverse wildlife, including lions, giraffes, and buffaloes.
