The last time Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) won a home match in the Pepsi University Football League was in 2013, when they beat Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) Nkozi 3–1 at the MUST Grounds in Mbarara. Since then, the university had failed to register a single home victory in the competition, despite participating in every edition — until Thursday, when the 12-year jinx was finally broken.

The MUST boys went on a scoring spree, thrashing visiting University of Kisubi (UNIK) 4–0 in a match that truly came to life in the second half.
The two sides played out a goalless first half before the hosts returned a transformed side after the break. Ronald Atuhaire broke the deadlock after capitalizing on a rebound from the UNIK goalkeeper, who had failed to hold Shebamu Ahikiriza’s powerful free kick, giving Mohamed Kyagambidwa’s team the lead.

Moments later, Marvin Ssebagala netted twice in quick succession — in the 65th and 69th minutes — to extend MUST’s dominance. Substitute Halorde Nahurira sealed the emphatic victory with a late strike in the 89th minute, confirming a long-awaited home win and ending the 12-year drought in style.

“It was a good win for us — the first in many years — and we hope to keep the momentum, especially as we face the defending champions, Uganda Martyrs University, in our next match,” said Prince Aine, the MUST tutor in charge of football.

Stuart Agaba, a Sports Science student at MUST, described the victory as a morale booster that will inspire the team to aim for a strong finish this season. The win lifted MUST to the top of Group A with four points, following their opening 1–1 draw away to Kampala International University (KIU) — pending other group fixtures.
