Police in the Rwenzori West Region have dismissed claims of an attempted kidnapping made by James Byamukama, an aspirant for Member of Parliament for Mwenge South Constituency, describing the allegations as false and unsupported by evidence.

Mr Byamukama had alleged that he narrowly escaped a kidnapping attempt by unknown individuals dressed in civilian clothes at a hotel in Fort Portal City, where he had booked accommodation. He claimed that a vehicle he described as a “drone” had been trailing him, raising alarm over his personal safety.

However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, the Territorial Police in Rwenzori West said thorough investigations had found no basis for the alleged kidnapping plot.
“Following thorough inquiries, police established that the vehicle Mr Byamukama claimed was trailing him belongs to Prime Financial Services,” police said. “At the time of the alleged incident, the vehicle was being driven by a staff member of Prime Financial Services who had also booked at the same hotel.”

Police noted that no evidence was found to support claims of an attempted abduction.
“There is no evidence to substantiate the alleged kidnapping claims,” the statement added.

The police have since cautioned political actors against what they termed “dramatic political gimmicks” that may cause unnecessary fear and panic among members of the public.
“We strongly warn all political actors against engaging in actions that create alarm and disrupt public order,” police said.

The statement comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the next electoral cycle, with police urging aspirants and leaders to conduct their campaigns responsibly and within the law.
