Medical staff at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital delivered a total of 147 live babies between December 24 and 29, bringing joy to families and health workers during the Christmas festive season.

The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Halson Kagure, said the deliveries averaged 21 births per day during the period, compared to the hospital’s usual daily average of 30 to 35 deliveries. He noted that the hospital records more than 12,000 deliveries annually.
“All the babies and their mothers are in good condition, and some have already been discharged,” Kagure said.
Among the beneficiaries is Judith Tusiime, a resident of Ndaija Rugando in Rwampara District, who delivered on December 25 and was still admitted in the postnatal ward by press time.

Tusiime, who was supported by her husband, was rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital on the night of December 25 in an unconscious state. Due to complications associated with her pregnancy, doctors recommended an emergency caesarean section, through which a healthy baby girl was successfully delivered.

Her husband described the experience as frightening but ultimately rewarding, saying that despite spending Christmas in hospital, the birth of their daughter was a blessing.

The couple applauded the hospital staff for their swift response and professionalism, which they credited with saving both mother and child.

A similar story was shared by Phiona Ainembabazi, who was referred to the hospital from Rubindi in Mbarara Rural District on the night of December 23. She underwent surgery the following day and delivered a baby girl weighing 2.4 kilograms.

Her husband, Jonan Tumusiime, expressed excitement, saying it was the best Christmas he had ever experienced.
He contrasted the situation with previous years when lower health facilities would close during the festive season, noting that the continued operation of referral and lower health facilities helped manage patient influx and ensured uninterrupted service delivery.
Kagure further revealed that out of the 147 total deliveries, 76 mothers delivered normally, while the rest underwent successful surgical procedures.

The hospital administration commended the medical staff for their dedication and commitment to duty during the festive season.
