The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the postponement of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, originally set to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, to August 2025.
In a statement released today, CAF highlighted significant progress in the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training facilities, hotels, hospitals, and other essential infrastructure in the three host nations. However, recommendations from CAF’s technical and infrastructure experts indicated that additional time is needed to ensure these facilities meet the required standards for hosting a successful tournament.
Uganda is set to host CHAN 2024
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed gratitude to the presidents of the host nations—William Ruto (Kenya), Samia Suluhu Hassan (Tanzania), and Yoweri Museveni (Uganda)—for their leadership and commitment to the project. "I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of football infrastructure in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda," Dr. Motsepe stated. "I am confident that the stadiums, training fields, hotels, and other facilities will meet CAF standards by August 2025, enabling us to host a highly successful tournament."
The draw for the rescheduled CHAN will take place in Nairobi on January 15, 2025, at 8:00 PM local time. The exact date for the commencement of the tournament in August 2025 will be announced in due course.
The CHAN is a prestigious competition featuring national teams comprised exclusively of players competing in their home countries. The decision to postpone aims to ensure the tournament’s success and provide the best possible experience for players, fans, and stakeholders.
