The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has raised alarm over the worsening health of its leader, Dr. Kizza Besigye, saying he has been rushed from Luzira Prison to a medical facility under heavy security. In a statement, the party described Besigye’s condition as “critical and deteriorating” and accused authorities of denying him the right to proper medical care. “It is a tragedy that a man who has dedicated his life to the health and freedom of others is being denied his own right to medical dignity,” the statement read. “We hold the regime and prison authorities fully accountable for his well-being. His personal doctors and family must be granted immediate and unrestricted access to him.”
The PFF rejected claims by Uganda Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine that Besigye’s transfer was for a “routine check-up.” Baine told this publication that, “Dr. Kizza Besigye receives necessary treatment like other prisoners, and he is fine.”
The party further criticised the court for demanding Besigye’s appearance despite his weakened state, describing the move as “cruel and calculated.”
PFF officials also warned against repeating past patterns of neglect, recalling the tragic fate of Besigye’s brother, Saasi. “Freedom has a price, and Dr. Besigye has carried that burden for decades. However, his life and health are not negotiable,” the statement said.
The PFF is calling for Besigye’s unconditional release to allow him to seek specialised, independent medical attention, urging supporters to keep him in their prayers and remain vigilant.
