KIGEZI
Kigezi Region has stepped up preparations for the 2026 general elections with the recruitment of 4,724 special election constables, who are now due for mandatory training ahead of deployment.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate said the recruitment aims to bolster security during the election period. "This exercise is meant to ensure that we have adequate manpower to support police operations before, during, and after the elections," Maate said.
According to regional security officials, the freshly recruited constables were drawn from all six districts. Kabale registered 730 recruits, Kanungu 884, Kisoro 998, Rubanda 670, Rukiga 334, and Rukungiri 1,158. The officers will serve on a three-month contract and will be deployed only after completing their training.
"These numbers reflect the security needs of each district, and all recruits will first undergo rigorous training before they can be deployed," Maate noted.
The two-week training programme is expected to start on Monday, December 8, 2025, with all recruits required to report on the same day.
Training will be conducted at three centres: Kigezi College Butobere for recruits from Kabale and Rukiga, Kisoro Primary Teachers' College for those from Kisoro and Rubanda, and Nyakina Primary School for recruits from Rukungiri and Kanungu.
Maate said the centres were selected to ensure convenience and proper supervision.
"We have designated these training grounds to ease management and ensure recruits receive standard training," he said.
Recruits have been instructed to carry essential personal items such as bedding, bathing materials, and physical-training attire, while female trainees must report with trimmed hair and adequate sanitary supplies.
Officials have cautioned them against packing unnecessary luggage due to limited space at the training centres. "We urge recruits to come with only the necessary items because the facilities will be congested," Maate advised.
Authorities say deployment will commence after the training phase, ahead of the heightened security demands expected during the 2026 general elections.
"Once training is completed, these constables will be deployed accordingly to reinforce security across the region," Maate said.
