Police in Nansana municipality have rescued a newborn baby boy who was dumped in a pit latrine by his 18-year-old mother, Ainembabazi Moreen, a housemaid. The incident occurred on January 6, 2025, between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. in Nansana East II zone. The discovery was made by Ainembabazi's employer, 39-year-old Niwagaba Praise, who became concerned after noticing Ainembabazi’s prolonged absence. Upon investigating, Niwagaba found her in the latrine room, bloodstained, and later heard a baby crying from the pit latrine.
Police were alerted, and a team of fire brigade personnel worked to rescue the baby. The newborn, found alive, was cleaned and immediately rushed to Kawempe Mulago Referral Hospital for care. Ainembabazi, who was still bleeding, was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
A case of attempted infanticide has been registered, and police are conducting further investigations. Authorities plan to interview Ainembabazi to understand her actions and also question the baby's father.
This tragic incident highlights a disturbing trend, following a similar case in Kasangati town council, Wakiso district, where a 25-year-old mother dumped her newborn in a latrine. Police have urged the public to report any signs of distress or potential harm to children to prevent such occurrences.
