Kampala,

The Kampala Metropolitan Police has raised concerns over a growing bus ticket fraud scheme, where impostors posing as bus company agents have been deceiving travelers, especially those heading upcountry.
According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, several complaints have been lodged regarding fraudsters operating at taxi stages and outside bus terminals. These individuals target unsuspecting travelers, issuing them counterfeit tickets that differ from authentic bus company receipts.

Five suspects arrested
As part of efforts to curb the fraudulent activities, police have arrested and charged five suspects with Obtaining Money by False Pretense.

“To combat this issue, police have worked with bus owners to implement measures that will prevent further fraudulent activities,” Onyango stated.

New measures to stop fraud
In collaboration with bus operators, authorities have introduced the following measures:
Elimination of unauthorized sales points: All makeshift offices and desks along roads and streets have been removed.
Strict ticket sales regulations: Bus tickets will now only be sold at official bus company offices to ensure authenticity.
Targeted police operations: Authorities have launched a crackdown to arrest more individuals involved in the scam.

Public urged to be bigilant
The police urge passengers to be extra cautious and only purchase tickets directly from authorized bus offices rather than street vendors.

“If you encounter any suspicious activity or fall victim to such fraud, report to the nearest police station immediately,” Onyango advised.

Authorities warn that further arrests will be made as they intensify efforts to bring perpetrators to justice and safeguard passengers from financial loss.
