Police in the Rwizi Region have arrested Enock Atwebembire, who is suspected of murdering Medius Ninsiima, a 52-year-old resident of Kyonyo Cell, Bushwere Parish, Mwizi Sub-county in Rwampara District.
According to police, the incident occurred on January 4, 2026, at around 6:00 p.m., when the deceased sustained deep cuts that led to her death.
“The deceased had left her home for Rwentojo Trading Centre to buy salt. While there, she encountered a campaign rally for a parliamentary candidate, where she delayed for some time. On her way back home, approximately 20 metres from her residence, she was attacked by an assailant armed with a panga. The attacker inflicted four deep cuts on her head and injured the fingers of her right hand,” police said in a statement.
The suspect fled the scene immediately after the attack. The statement further indicates that Ninsiima raised an alarm that attracted members of the community; however, she later succumbed to excessive bleeding.
Police explained that investigations revealed the suspect had, on a previous occasion, been found hiding under the deceased’s bed while armed with a panga. Police added that the deceased was the aunt of the suspect.
As investigations continue, police deployed a sniffer dog, which led investigators to the suspect.
“Police promptly introduced a canine, Hector, at the scene, which tracked a scent trail to a public gathering, where the suspect, Enock Atwebembire, was identified and arrested,” police added.
