Sudan’s army on Thursday announced the discovery of mass graves containing hundreds of civilians in Omdurman, the twin city of the capital Khartoum. In a statement, the military said that 648 civilians had been detained by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under "horrific and inhumane conditions" inside a school located in the Salha neighborhood of Omdurman. “Approximately 465 individuals died and were buried in mass graves, some containing more than 27 bodies each,” the army said.
The RSF has not yet commented on the allegations. The announcement comes just days after the Sudanese army declared Khartoum “completely free” of RSF presence, following months of fierce fighting. Since April 2023, the RSF and the Sudanese army have been locked in a brutal power struggle, which has plunged the country into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
According to the United Nations and local authorities, more than 20,000 people have been killed and over 15 million displaced. However, some U.S.-based researchers estimate the death toll to be as high as 130,000.
