Men looking to spice up their love lives might want to rethink their diet. According to new research, consuming spicy food frequently could dampen a man's sexual desire and increase the risk of erectile dysfunction (ED).
The study, conducted by urologists from the University of South China, found that men who ate spicy food three or more times a week were nearly three times more likely to experience erectile problems. "Our study suggests that frequent spicy food consumption may increase the risk of erectile dysfunction, especially among non-smokers," the researchers noted. They found that the more spicy food consumed, the greater the severity of ED.
The study, published in Translational Andrology and Urology, involved around 400 men with and without ED. Participants completed detailed questionnaires about their diets, lifestyles, and ED status, including assessments of how ED affected their relationships, health, and psychological well-being.

Results showed that non-smokers who consumed spicy food more than three times a week had a 2.58 times higher risk of developing ED. Interestingly, no increased risk was observed in smokers, possibly because smoking is already a significant risk factor for ED, which might obscure any additional impact from spicy foods.
The study also found that frequent consumption of spicy food was associated with lower testosterone levels—up to 12% lower in men who ate spicy food daily compared to non-eaters. Additionally, men who regularly consumed spicy foods were more likely to report relationship problems, possibly due to increased irritability linked to their diet.

Commenting on the findings, Professor Raj Persad, a consultant urologist at Bristol Urology, said, "This is an interesting observational study. It highlights the importance of not just treating erectile dysfunction with medication but also considering lifestyle factors, such as diet and smoking, that may contribute to the condition."
The research underscores the potential impact of diet on sexual health and suggests that men with ED may benefit from reducing their intake of spicy foods.
