IBANDA - A joint security team in Ibanda District has recovered an AK47 rifle with two live rounds of ammunition, believed to have been used in several robberies and cattle thefts across multiple districts. The recovery took place on October 15, 2024, in Igorora Village, Igorora Parish, Igorora Town Council.

According to a statement from Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, the rifle was found in the possession of Kiiza Ashraf, a suspected notorious robber and thug who has been evading arrest for some time. Kiiza, who operated mainly in Mbarara, Kazo, Kiruhura, and Kamwenge districts, had been on the run, making it difficult for security forces to apprehend him.

The recovered gun

The recovered gun, identified as No. UG PSO 56S 4101 385 13187, was discovered hidden in a swamp during the operation. Kiiza was arrested on October 10, 2024, in a joint intelligence-led operation conducted by the Uganda Police, Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), and Internal Security Organisation (ISO). After his arrest, he was handed over to Bihanga Army Barracks for further interrogation.

During preliminary inquiries, Kiiza denied ownership of the gun but revealed that it was given to him by an accomplice named Godfrey, another known thief based in Kamwenge District. Kiiza claimed that Godfrey had stolen the gun but did not disclose the source.

Further investigations are ongoing to determine where the gun was stolen from and to apprehend additional suspects involved in the criminal activities.
