Mitooma
The NRM party registrar, Dr. Tanga Odoi, has halted the district NRM structure elections in Mitooma following violent clashes during the voting exercise at the district headquarters. The chaos erupted after Moses Tumwekwatse, the District Speaker, was declared winner of the NRM District Chairperson race with 349 votes, defeating the incumbent Byaboneka Wilberforce Muhangi, who garnered 297 votes.
However, Byaboneka rejected the outcome, alleging irregularities and the participation of ineligible voters. His protest escalated into a physical confrontation, prompting District Registrar Kyabakama Ephraim to suspend the elections and seek guidance from Dr. Odoi.
Upon his arrival in Mitooma, Dr. Odoi condemned the violence and rebuked Byaboneka for his conduct.
“You should behave like a leader,” he said. “When I am speaking, you must listen. Leaders do not shout over others.” He stressed that such behavior undermines the integrity of the NRM party.
Dr. Odoi then announced the suspension of the election process. “I have decided that new elections will be held to fill these positions,” he stated.
Tumwekwatse also condemned the violence and urged leaders to respect the democratic process. “Some people fear losing,” he said. “Leaders must accept the choice of the people.”
