Police in Kampala have arrested a 38-year-old man, Kuteeka Hassan, in connection with a bag-snatching incident in which he allegedly impersonated a police officer.
Kuteeka, a resident of Musibula Zone in Rubaga Division, is accused of stealing a handbag from a 17-year-old girl. During his arrest, officers recovered a fraudulent police identification card (No. CID 006) bearing his name and the logo of the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID).
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Rachael Kawala, said the arrest followed a tip-off after the victim identified the suspect’s vehicle—a Toyota Golf, registration number UAQ 950P—which had previously been linked to a similar bag-snatching incident near Nateete traffic lights in January 2026.
“Acting on the tip-off at around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, officers moved swiftly to apprehend the suspect. A search revealed the fake ID, confirming that he was impersonating a police officer,” Kawala said.
Police have since registered a case of personation, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any individuals falsely claiming to be law enforcement officers.
