Wakiso – A police operation conducted on Tuesday night led to the arrest of more than 20 youths accused of terrorizing villages in Kakiri, Wakiso District, along Hoima Road over the past month.
The operation was triggered by an incident in which a thief broke into the vehicle of Kakiri Police Division Commander, Hassan Mugerwa, and stole his phone. Using CCTV footage from private security cameras, police were able to identify the suspect, who was later tracked down in Namayumba, also in Wakiso District.
The arrest of the prime suspect led to further crackdowns, resulting in the capture of his accomplices and the recovery of machetes, sacks of marijuana, and other stolen items believed to have been used in criminal activities.
Police say the arrested individuals have been linked to a string of robberies and violent attacks that have left residents in fear. "We have been receiving numerous complaints from the public about youth gangs breaking into homes, attacking pedestrians, and robbing motorists along Hoima Road. This operation is part of our ongoing efforts to restore security in the area," a senior police officer stated.
The suspects are currently detained at Kakiri Police Station, pending further investigations and possible prosecution. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as security operations continue to crack down on crime in the district.
Residents express relief
Following the arrests, residents expressed relief, saying they have been living in fear due to frequent criminal activities. "These youths have been breaking into homes, attacking people at night, and even robbing businesses. We hope the police continue their efforts to keep our community safe," said James Mugisha, a shopkeeper in Kakiri.
Police have assured the public that more operations will be conducted to dismantle criminal networks operating in Wakiso District and beyond.
