The Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) is set to construct a legal aid clinic at Nyamushekera Prison to empower inmates with skills for self-representation and to strengthen the capacity of prison officers.
FHRI Executive Director, Dr. Livingstone Sewanyana, revealed this on Wednesday in Bushenyi District during a ceremony held to recognise champions of change in the Greater Bushenyi region for their contributions to criminal justice reforms in the 2024/25 period.
Dr. Sewanyana said FHRI will also build the capacity of Police Criminal Investigators and Community Liaison Officers, and conduct hybrid plea-bargaining sessions to improve access to justice.
The Resident Judge of the Bushenyi High Court Circuit, Hon. Justice Amos Kwizera, who delivered the keynote address, said timely access to justice is a constitutional right that is often violated during arrest, detention, court delays and in prisons due to poor conditions.
