MBARARA, Uganda
Police in Mbarara City South Division have launched an investigation into a case of attempted murder after a 53-year-old businesswoman was brutally assaulted with a machete by her husband following a domestic dispute.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, in Rwemirinzi Cell, Nyamitanga Division, Mbarara City South.
According to police reports, the victim, identified as Rossette Nuwagaba, returned home from a trip to her village only to find her husband, Alex Nuwagaba, inside the house with another woman. An argument ensued, prompting Rossette—who is the sole tenant renting the premises—to order her husband to leave.
As she was ejecting him from the house, Rossette discovered that her television set was missing. When she confiscated her husband's bag to inquire about the missing appliance, Alex reportedly grabbed a machete (panga) and slashed her repeatedly, inflicting severe injuries to her head and hand.
The victim was rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where she is currently receiving emergency medical treatment.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, Rwizi Regional Police Spokesperson SP Samson Kasasira stated that the suspect was apprehended shortly after the attack.
"The suspect is already in police custody pending a formal examination of his mental status," SP Kasasira said in an official statement, adding that full inquiries into the matter are actively ongoing.
