Bushenyi – The Minister of Science and Innovation, Dr. Monica Musenero, has urged Ugandans to embrace herbal medicine with a positive mindset. She emphasized that herbal medicine is not useless, contrary to the beliefs of some medical practitioners whose perspectives have been shaped by colonial-era education.
Dr. Musenero made these remarks on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at the Rukararwe Partnership Workshop for Rural Development in Bushenyi District, where researchers are developing a prototype anti-prostate cancer syrup, funded by the central government.
A prototype syrup is a preliminary or experimental version of a medicinal formulation, used for testing and refinement before large-scale production. Her call to action is part of a broader effort to promote the value and potential of traditional herbal remedies in Uganda.
She encouraged scientists to seize the opportunity to innovate and create positive change, highlighting that all modern drugs originate from herbs.
Annet Katusiime Mugisha, the Woman Member of Parliament for Bushenyi District, praised researchers for their progress and urged Ugandans to change their negative mindset towards herbal medicine. She emphasized the importance of using herbal remedies alongside imported medicines.
Katusiime also stressed the need to promote medicinal herbs and recognize their effectiveness in treating various illnesses.
Johnson Bitarabeho, Chairman of the Rukararwe Partnership Workshop for Rural Development, shared the organization's history and objectives. Established in 1986, after the liberation war, the organization aims to promote medicinal herbs and bring together herbalists to research and develop herbal medicines.
