Bushenyi – Three people died and one was injured on Friday after a crusade tent they were moving touched a high-voltage power line in Bushenyi District. The incident occurred at Kashenyi Market Place, Kiruhura Village, Ryeishe Parish, Ibaare Sub-county, during a crusade organized by Rock Ministries Church.

The deceased were identified as, Atuhweere Blessed, 23, resident of Mugaga Village, Kayonza Sub-county, Ntungamo District, Narutazari Waiswa, 48, resident of Kinyemi Village, Mutara Sub-county, Mitooma District and Rwakisheija William, 43, resident of Rwenkyenkye Village, Bumbaire Sub-county, Bushenyi District.

SP Tayebwa Apollo, the Acting Police Spokesperson for Greater Bushenyi, confirmed the deaths and said that Nathan Mulekwa, 40, survived with injuries. His current condition and whereabouts were still being established. Preliminary findings indicate that the accident occurred when the metallic tip of the tent being shifted came into contact with a three-phase high-voltage power line. Police also revealed that the crusade organizers had not notified authorities in advance for security and technical guidance.

SP Tayebwa cautioned the public against holding events under or near electricity lines, especially where high-voltage wires are involved, warning that tents and other metallic structures pose serious risks.
A brief standoff occurred between police and relatives of the deceased, who initially resisted the removal of the bodies for postmortem examination. Officers, however, managed the scene in line with procedure and transferred the bodies to KIU Teaching Hospital Mortuary in Ishaka for further examination.

Bushenyi Police have since launched investigations into the incident and urged the public to cooperate.
“We strongly urge all event organizers to always notify police in advance so that we can provide the necessary security, technical guidance, and support to prevent such tragedies,” SP Tayebwa said.
