WAKISO
Police have arrested one suspect and recovered two heifers and a motor vehicle during an operation targeting suspected cattle theft in Ndejje, Wakiso District.
The operation was conducted on October 4, 2026, in Mirimu Zone, Ndejje Parish, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, after police received intelligence about a vehicle allegedly being used to transport stolen cattle.
Officers from Katwe Police Division intercepted motor vehicle registration number UAM 175K and found four men reportedly offloading cattle.
Police said three of the men fled after seeing the officers, while one was arrested.
The suspect was identified as Kakumba Amos, a resident of Matugga.
The two heifers and the vehicle were recovered and taken to Katwe Police Division as investigators began inquiries into the source and ownership of the animals.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects could be part of a wider group involved in cattle theft.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects may be part of a group involved in stealing cattle from different areas, including Hoima Road and Semuto, and selling them to buyers in the Ndejje area,” Owoyesigyire said.
Police are investigating whether the recovered animals were stolen from the areas mentioned and are working to establish their rightful owners.
The three suspects who escaped are also being pursued.
Owoyesigyire said investigators were working to establish the full extent of the suspected network and identify other people involved in the alleged theft and sale of cattle.
“Our officers are continuing with investigations and pursuing the suspects who are still at large so that we can establish the full extent of this network and bring those involved to justice,” he said.
Police have appealed to members of the public with information about the suspects or other stolen cattle to contact them and assist with the investigation.
Cattle owners who have recently lost animals are also encouraged to report their cases to police and provide identifying information that could help investigators establish whether the recovered heifers are among the missing livestock.
The arrested suspect remains in custody as police continue investigating the alleged cattle theft network.
