Over 500 Primary Seven candidates from 15 primary schools in Katerera Constituency, Rubirizi District, have participated in a one-day training and mentorship session aimed at preparing them for the forthcoming Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE). The training, organized by Kirugu Secondary School, was held today at the school premises and focused on equipping learners with examination techniques, confidence, and practical study skills to improve performance in the national exams.

According to Mr. Zubair Muhwezi, a UNEB examiner and Deputy Headteacher at Rugyenda Muslim Primary School, the workshop was designed to assess candidates’ knowledge, competence, and readiness, while identifying weak areas that need improvement.
“Since UNEB examiners in Rubirizi started organizing such workshops, we have seen great improvement in learners’ performance across several schools,”
Mr. Zubair said. “Previously, we faced challenges such as school dropouts, early marriages, and absenteeism, especially in Katerera, but parents, teachers, and local leaders are now working together to address these issues.”
The Guest Speaker, Dr. Agaba Obed Byakureka, the NRM LC5 flag bearer for Rubirizi District, urged parents to support their children’s education, emphasizing that poverty, poor parenting, domestic violence, and drug abuse continue to affect school performance.
“Parents should love their children, care for them, and ensure they attend school regularly. Education is the key to ending poverty,” Dr. Agaba said.
Madam Asenath Bamureeba, the Headmistress of Kirugu Secondary School and sponsor of the mentorship program, encouraged candidates to remain disciplined, prayerful, and focused as they prepare for the national exams. “Respect and discipline are the foundations of knowledge and wisdom. Read your books seriously and prepare well for your exams,” she advised.
The training also covered new UNEB guidelines, career guidance and counselling, mentorship, and how to avoid common mistakes during exams. Organizers said they plan to extend similar mentorship sessions to other sub-counties in Rubirizi to ensure improved PLE performance across the district.
