Police uncover evidence linking catholic Priest to URA staff's death

Arrested: Fr Dominic Alinga

Fr. Dominic Alinga, the main suspect in the murder of Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) employee John Bosco Ngorok, was transferred from Tororo Central Police station to Entebbe on Monday. Fr. Alinga had handed himself over to Tororo police on Sunday after going into hiding following the incident on Saturday, which resulted in Ngorok’s death.

Police Spokesperson Kituma Rusoke detailed that on August 3, 2024, around 1:50 am, police received a report of a suspected murder on the road from Kitooro to Entebbe International Airport. The victim, identified as 30-year-old Ngorok from the URA domestic tax department, had been stabbed in the neck and head. Despite being rushed to Grade B Entebbe hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. An investigation was immediately launched.

Rusoke stated that Fr. Alinga, a priest at Irirri Catholic Parish in Nakapiripirit district, was the key suspect. Alinga had been suspended by the church over allegations of stealing offertory worth sh6m. Ngorok, a choir trainer from Moroto Diocese, had reportedly lent sh11m to Fr. Alinga, which led to friction between them when the priest failed to repay the loan, allegedly resulting in Ngorok's murder.

Murdered: John Bosco Ngorok

Following the incident, Fr. Alinga sent messages to family members denying the murder and claiming Ngorok had stabbed himself. These messages, which included details about his properties and instructions to his family, raised concerns about his potential suicide, prompting influential Karamoja leaders to intervene.
Faith Nakut, Napak Woman Member of Parliament, played a critical role in convincing Fr. Alinga to surrender to the police. Nakut advised his friends and family to ensure he reported to the police for his safety.

Detectives have obtained CCTV footage, including recordings from Peniel Beach Hotel where the suspect and victim spent their last moments, and from the area near the UN offices in Entebbe where the alleged stabbing occurred. They also recovered the alleged murder weapon, the deceased’s car, and a motorcycle involved in the incident. Statements from hotel staff and other witnesses have been collected.
Fr. Alinga is being interrogated as detectives reconstruct the events leading to Ngorok’s death.
