Police in Mbarara City have launched investigations into an attempted robbery and attack on the Rwizi Regional Police Commander (RPC), SSP Bangambaki Alfred, who was ambushed by machete-wielding thugs at his residence in the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to a statement issued by SP Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police spokesperson, the incident occurred on December 6, 2025, at around 3:30 a.m. at Mbaguta Cell, Ruharo Ward in Mbarara City.
SSP Bangambaki was returning home when he was confronted by a group of assailants armed with machetes. Police say the thugs had been lying in wait at the gate, while another yet-to-be-identified accomplice waited on a motorcycle along the access road.
The attackers allegedly attempted to break into the vehicle and harm its occupants using pangas. In self-defence, the RPC shot and fatally wounded one of the assailants, while the motorcycle rider fled the scene upon hearing the gunfire.
During the attack, fragments of shattered glass injured a passenger identified as Areeba Munda, who sustained facial injuries.
The body of the deceased suspect, whose identity remains unknown, was taken to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
Police have since intensified operations to track down the fleeing suspects and dismantle the criminal group behind the attack.
