The kick-off of the CECAFA Women’s Challenge Cup has been postponed to Friday, June 13, due to the late arrival of some participating teams.
Originally scheduled to begin today, the tournament—now featuring five of the initially expected ten teams—has seen its opening matches rescheduled to allow for all teams to be in place.
“We have had to push the kick-off by a day as the South Sudan team, due to some logistical challenges, can only arrive on Wednesday,” said Yusuf Mossi, CECAFA Competitions Director.

Despite the change in date, the original fixtures and overall schedule remain intact. The opening match between defending champions Uganda and Burundi, followed by hosts Tanzania facing South Sudan, will both now take place on Friday. Mossi confirmed that the teams from Burundi and Uganda have already arrived in Dar es Salaam, with Kenya expected to land on Wednesday night.

He added that the tournament is not only a competition but also an opportunity for CECAFA representatives, especially hosts Tanzania, to prepare for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. It also provides valuable international exposure to all the participating teams.

Uganda’s team features seasoned goalkeeper and captain Ruth Aturo, who plays for Tanzanian second-tier side Tausi Women FC. Defender Zzida, captain of the Boni Consilii Isingiro Girls Football Team, also joins the squad after leading her school to a bronze medal at the USSSA National Girls Football Championship held last month in Bukedea.

Following their opener against Burundi, Uganda will face South Sudan on June 15, Kenya on June 17, and conclude with a tie against Tanzania on June 19.

The tournament is being played in a round-robin format, with the top team crowned as champions.
