Mbarara City

The Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) has issued a public advisory announcing the temporary closure of a critical section of the Mbarara–Ishaka Road (National Road A109) in Mbarara City to allow for essential emergency maintenance. The closure will affect the stretch between Kilometer 3+500 and Kilometer 3+900. The works are scheduled for Friday, November 7, 2025, and will last 15 hours, starting at 9:00 AM and concluding at 12:00 AM (midnight). This vital transport corridor connects several districts, including Bushenyi, Sheema, Kasese, Mbarara, Ntungamo, and Rukungiri, and serves as a key inter-regional route linking Uganda to Rwanda, South Sudan, and Tanzania.

Context and Scope of Works
The emergency intervention aims to fill and repair numerous dangerous potholes that have severely deteriorated the road and contributed to several recent accidents. This temporary work is a direct response to the long-standing public outcry over the unsafe condition of the highway. While the current intervention addresses immediate safety concerns, the government has acknowledged the need for full rehabilitation. Funding for the complete reconstruction of the Mbarara–Ishaka Road is expected to be released in the 2026/27 financial year.

Travel Advisory
Motorists are strongly advised to use alternative routes during the 15-hour closure period to avoid delays and traffic congestion. The Ministry of Works and Transport apologises for any inconvenience caused by these essential and overdue safety works.
