Kabale

Anxiety has gripped Nyabikoni Secondary School in Kabale Municipality following the mysterious disappearance of a Senior Two student, now missing for two weeks. Police in the Kigezi region have launched investigations into the disappearance of Joel Niwarinda, 15, who reportedly went missing in the early hours of October 21, 2025. Classmates describe Niwarinda as a well-disciplined and calm student with no known history of misconduct. “He had no record of indiscipline. He was one of the most well-behaved students in the school,” a student who preferred anonymity said.

Family Appeals for Help
Niwarinda’s mother, Caroline Abaasa, a hospital administrator at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, said the family has tirelessly searched several areas including Nyabikoni, Kigongi Ward, Rwakaraba, and neighbouring communities, but without success.
“We have looked everywhere. We are pleading with the public to help us find Joel,” she said.
Although the school administration has not yet issued an official statement, the case was reported at Kabale Central Police Station under reference number 41/23/10/2025.

Police Investigating
The incident has raised concern among parents regarding safety in boarding schools. Detectives in Kabale have confirmed that investigations are underway to establish the circumstances under which the student disappeared from the boarding section.

Hospital Staff in Distress
The disappearance has also affected staff at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where Niwarinda’s mother works.
The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Halson Kagure, expressed concern and solidarity with the family. “This situation is distressing. We are concerned as a hospital community, and we encourage everyone to continue sharing the information to aid the search,” Kagure said.
As the search continues, Niwarinda’s whereabouts remain unknown. The family is appealing to anyone with information to report to the nearest police station, or call the parents on 0772026106 / 0755825773 / 0774872187
