The local football governing body, FUFA, has granted Mbarara City FC temporary permission to host home matches at Kakyeka Stadium. This means the Ankole Lions’ first home game against UPDF FC this Friday, October 3, will be played at Kakyeka. The facility, which has long faced criticism from both visiting teams and FUFA, had earlier been denied approval to host games this season. As a result, Mbarara City had secured permission to play its home fixtures at Rwamwanja Grounds in Kamwenge District.
Broken perimeter fense was one of the reasons for blocking Kakyeka hosting rights
However, in a letter sent today to the club’s official email, the FUFA Competitions Committee confirmed that Kakyeka has been given temporary approval following management’s efforts to renovate and upgrade the playing surface and other key areas since July. “Mbarara City, FUFA is pleased to inform you that Kakyeka Stadium–Mbarara has been granted temporary approval for use, subject to close supervision, effective from the upcoming StarTimes Uganda Premier League match on Friday, 3rd October 2025. This follows a pre-inspection visit on 22nd September 2025 and review by the FUFA Club Licensing Committee on 27th September 2025,” the letter read in part. “For further clarification, please contact the UPL secretariat. We appreciate your cooperation in upholding FUFA Club Licensing standards and wish you success in the forthcoming 2025/2026 season. Once again, we emphasise that quality stadiums are fundamental for the development and progress of Ugandan football. Compliance with these requirements will be strictly enforced by FUFA,” it added.

The decision comes as a relief to home fans and club management, who were worried about the additional expenses of travel, accommodation, and upkeep while playing in Rwamwanja.
However, the news is unlikely to be welcomed by the Kamwenge and Rwamwanja community, who had been eagerly anticipating their first-ever Uganda Premier League matches in history.
